Nissan 240sx Styling Cues

Today I will describe and explain the styling cues as well as a little background of the S13/180sx Generation of 240sx's.

Some Japanese Terms I will be using are as follows:

Zenki = Early
Chuuki = Middle
Kouki = Late

Other Terms:

1st Generation 240sx ('89-'94) =180sx/S13
S14 = 1995-1998 240sx

Zenki

Nissan came out with the Nissan 240sx in North America in 1989. It came equipped with a KA24E Single Over Head Cam engine that made 144HP @ 5600rpm and 155LB/FT torque @ 4400rpm. The engine was later revised in 1990 to produce 140HP @ 5600rpm and 155LB/FT torque @ 4400rpm. The power drop was due to a lowered compression ratio. The 1989 KA engine has a compression ratio of 9.1:1 while the 1990 KA engine retained a compression ratio of 8.6:1.

The 1989-1990 Nissan 240sx is considered the Zenki, or Early Model 240sx stateside. Visual Cues of a Zenki 1st Generation 240sx would include the front bumper that is affectionately known as the Pignose bumper to 240sx and 180sx enthusiasts.

Chuuki

Nissan revised the 1st Generation 240sx with a re-designed cylinder head and a new look in 1991. Starting in 1991, Nissan equipped their 240sx with a KA24DE Dual Over Head Cam Engine. Variants of this engine were used in the Nissan 240sx up until the demise of the US-Spec S14 in 1998. The 1991-1994 Nissan 240sx's KA24DE DOHC engine produced 155HP @ 5600rpm and 156LB/FT torque @ 4400rpm. The compression ratio of the engine sits between 9.2:1~9.5:1 depending if you listen to Nissan Redline or the Factory Service Manual.

The 1991-1994 Nissan 240sx did away with the Pignose Bumper of the Zenki 1st Generation 240sx and replaced it with a Chuuki Bumper. The Chuuki bumper has smoother lines and is more contoured with the front end of the 1st Generation 240sx which numbers of 240sx owners and enthusiasts argue is the better looking of the two bumpers.

Kouki
The Kouki "240sx" never saw the light of US shores. The Japanese Spec Nissan 180sx attained the Kouki label in 1994-1998. The most notable changes to the Kouki 180 was the revision of the taillights. A Type-X Aero Bumper was also introduced in a line of Kouki 180sx's. The Kouki 180sx was equipped with an SR20DET engine that produced 202HP @ 6000rpm and 204LB/FT of torque at 4000rpm. The Kouki 180sx also had the engine option of a non-turbo SR20DE engine... with output levels lower than that of the turbo version.

Something to note: For some ungodly reason that I cannot begin to comprehend, in 1994 Nissan only offered the 240sx in the form of a Special Edition Convertible model equipped with a 4-speed Automatic transmission.

Convertible = Heavy. Some may argue that they are sexy. But it doesn't change the fact that the car is a fatty (2870LBS) *O*,
Automatic = waiting for a 5-speed manual swap

ALL U.S. Spec 240sx Convertibles were partially assembled in Japan and finished off by American Specialty Cars in California.

The Japanese Spec S13 Convertible was short lived, but the convertible made a comeback when Autech Japan teamed with Nissan to produce the S15 Spec-S Silvia Varietta.
